After last night’s shower, Coco was in high spirits this morning. He sat at the window near my bed and watched the scene below. He always liked to do so even when he was a young puppy. He liked the fresh air. But it seemed he couldn’t believe he could watch men and women, dogs and cats and running cars, safely, from his house itself.

Looking out, Coco gives the profile of a thinker. He looks at the left, and then at the right, taking a somber view of life. He keeps his straight left leg on one side and bends his long back slightly to study closely if everything was okay.

Often, he rushed to the window, disturbed by the sound of a police or ambulance siren. Mobikes running with no silencers are another pain for him. But he is also driven by plain curiosity to look out from his second floor window.

Coco knows I have been mixing something in his milk for breakfast. This was a calcium tablet powdered to mix with his morning food on doctor’s advice. This morning, he saw the packet and took it in his mouth from a table. He was obviously curious and wanted to see my reaction, his ears straight up. Before he could chew up the whole packet and spoil an entire strip of tablets, he was caught.

After his breakfast, Coco was with me downstairs. He waited for the morning traffic to cross and then walked down to the road-bridge. While going through his morning rituals, Coco must sniff at every pile of rubbish or grass to see if somebody he knew had passed that way. A bicycle lane across the bridge is rarely used by cyclists. It is also rarely cleared of wild grass or small garbage dumps. Often homeless people make use of the secluded place to relax or sleep.

Coco must watch everybody that wants to follow him or is ahead of him. Not just stray dogs, he is most scared of cows because of their large bodies. These days he doesn’t waste much time in the area and is ready to resume his daily walk in front of our and other housing societies.

This morning, there was a surprise appearance of the tall and much-larger bully-dog who alerts Coco to raise his ears and chest out. Since any close confrontation was not advisable, we quickly turned the other way and walked our way. This bully had once bitten Coco and forced him to visit the Moti Bagh Veterinary Hospital for anti-rabies shots.
